As soon as you hear these students talk during a meeting, you know they mean business. But who are they?
On March 3, I had the opportunity of sitting at one of UTPB Senate meetings which are open for everyone to attend. Ayra Cirilo, communications major and secretary in the Senate, says that “I know that not a lot of students know that the Senate exists, but one of our main goals this semester is to get out there more and advertise. We are here to help in any way.” Currently there are 24 student senators from different majors, ages, and even some international students. Their purpose is to be the bridge between students and faculty.
Senate President Jaston Brink does not take his role lightly and knows very well what it entails “The students have a voice. So my job as president is really to make sure the students’ voices are heard, you know. Our slogan is ‘Your Campus, Your Voice.’ So, every student deserves a voice and they have a voice. So it’s making sure that their voice is heard not only with my constituents within the Student Senate but also within the administration.”
One of the things that past Student Senate has been able to accomplish was the push to build the Student Activities Center. Marco Corral, treasurer of Student Senate, remarks on the value of the Senate. He said: “Thanks to the Student Senate we were able to raise enough signatures from the Student Body and passed a resolution for the system to approve the creation of the Student Activities Center.”
If you would like to be the bridge between students and faculty (and help make a difference) elections are coming up. The deadline to apply is March 29. You must be a registered student and have at least a 2.0 GPA (Grade Point Average). If you want to be part of the Executive Board you must have at least a 2.5 GPA.
The organization meets every Friday at the Library Lecture Hall 002 at 5:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend
