The Latin American Film Club had its first meeting on Wednesday, January 31 to view La Nana (The Maid). The club aims to be a platform where you can practice and enrich your bilingual skills. Before the beginning of the movie, Dr. Jose Moreno gave an overview of what the movie is about and the cultural context. Cultural discussions related to the movie followed up after the end of the movie where an array of topics were touched. Many of the topics are neither peculiar nor distant than other perceived cultural perspectives.

The first film selection was La Nana a Chilean movie directed by Sebastian Silva. The movie narrates the life of a maid, Raquel, who has worked more than twenty years for a wealthy Chilean family. Unfortunately, she begins suffering dizzy spells and her boss decides to hire additional help to take pressure off her. She felts threatened and so she launches an all-out assault on each new employee who walks through the family’s doors.

The films are screened in Spanish with English subtitles. Also, for the audience, there’s pizza and drinks.
