Last season the UT Permian Basin Basketball team went 15-0 at the Falcon Dome and proved how important home court advantage can be.
From the packed house to the Flock distracting opposing teams, Falcons’ new head coach Josh Newman says its something he is excited to see for the first time against Sul Ross, at 5:30 p.m. today.
“I don’t know what to expect truth to be told,” Newman said.
“I know out of the corner of my eye the flock is going to be there and I have to make sure I’m not paying attention to them, but I really don’t know what to expect. When I took the opportunity to be here all you kept hearing about was the crowd, the atmosphere, the noise level, and hopefully well be able to have what they had last year.”
After a season where Andy Newman’s senior loaded team went 26-7 record and made it to the sweet sixteen, Josh Newman and his roster of 12 new players has proven they are capable of picking up right where last year’s team left off.
So far, the Falcons are 3-1 this season after four true road games and suffered their first loss last weekend to St. Mary’s 75-71. The team was able to rebound on Saturday edging out Texas A&M International 53-50.
“I’m actually very happy with the guys right now,” Newman said.
“Anytime that you go 3-1 with four true road games is a success. We’re still trying to figure out our team, we’re doing some good things, we’re doing some bad things. I think we left our offensive in Colorado, but we did travel our defense to Laredo. So, once we get this thing figured out hopefully, we can have some more success.”
One thing the Falcons will need to work on is shooting the basketball. Right now, the team is 31.9 % from behind the arc and 45.5% from the field as a whole. However, the team has been very capable in its ability to get to the free throw line averaging 29 attempts per game.
“Were not very good at it,” Newman said about shooting threes
“I’m not going to sugarcoat things, I’m going, to be honest. I’m not going to try to give our opponents any tease, but we struggle to shoot the ball. That’s going to be something that we continue to work on. We try to shoot at least 30 minutes a day in practice, but you have to have guys that can make shots. Right now, we struggle to shoot the three, but I think our inside game is actually really good so we need to make sure that we have a little bit more balance on the inside and the outside.”
Jacob Ledoux leads the Falcons in scoring with 16 points per game, while Kyree Elder has 14 points per game.
The Falcons will not have to travel as much for their next six games, with five games being at home.
